What the 2026 Public University Strike Means for Students

Kenya’s October 2026 public university strike is an industrial dispute over staff employment terms and the 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). This explainer focuses on what the dispute means for students; for the latest strike status, see our strike update.

What is a CBA?

A CBA is a negotiated agreement between employers and workers’ representatives. It can set terms such as pay, allowances, working conditions and other employment matters. In this dispute, university staff unions say issues concerning the 2025–2029 agreement and its financing remain unresolved.

Why campus impact differs

Several unions represent academic and non-academic staff, and participation can differ between institutions and services. The effect on lectures, examinations, laboratory access, research supervision and administrative offices may therefore vary by campus and department.

A checklist for students

  • Use your university’s official portal, email and website as the source for campus-specific information.
  • Confirm examinations, practicals, placements and fee or registration deadlines with your department.
  • Save official notices that change your academic calendar.
  • Before travelling to campus, check whether the service you need is operating.
  • Treat strike-end dates on social media as unconfirmed unless the university or parties issue a formal notice.
