Public University Strike Continues as Unions Reject CBA Offer
Public university staff unions were still reporting a nationwide strike over the 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) on October 9, 2026. UASU’s strike information page lists the action as in progress, and union officials said on October 5 that members would not return to work until outstanding issues were addressed.
The industrial action involves the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU), the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU) and the Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational Institutions, Hospitals and Allied Workers (KUDHEIHA). The dispute concerns the negotiation, conclusion, registration and implementation of the new CBA, as well as related funding and employment issues.
What students should check
The level of disruption can differ by institution and department. A nationwide strike notice does not by itself confirm whether a particular lecture, examination, clinical placement, registration deadline or office service is operating.
- Check your university’s official website, email and student portal for current notices.
- Confirm examination and practical schedules with your department before travelling.
- Ask the university in writing about deadlines affected by the disruption.
- Do not rely on unofficial social-media claims that a campus has reopened or that a deal has been signed.
What could end the strike?
The unions, university employers and government can negotiate a settlement or return-to-work arrangement. As of October 9, we found no confirmed public announcement ending the strike. Students should wait for a formal notice from their institution or the parties to the dispute before making plans based on a claimed agreement.
