Nairobi, Kenya (Daily Report KE) — Kenya national rugby sevens team secured a bronze medal while the Kenya women’s national rugby sevens team finished fifth at the opening leg of the HSBC SVNS 2 tournament held at a sold-out Nyayo National Stadium over the weekend.

The two-day event, staged on February 14 and 15, marked the launch of the newly created Division Two series, drawing six men’s and six women’s teams.

Shujaa Claim Bronze

Under head coach Kevin Wambua, Shujaa won four out of five matches, defeating Uruguay, Belgium, Germany and Canada in their opening fixtures.

Their only loss came in the final match, falling 5–21 to the United States. Kenya finished third with 12 points, level with Germany and the USA, but settled for bronze based on tournament standings.

Kenya’s George Ooro was crowned Men’s Player of the Tournament after a series of standout performances that anchored the team’s podium finish.

Lionesses End Fifth

In the women’s competition, Argentina, newly promoted HSBC SVNS 3 champions — clinched the inaugural HSBC SVNS 2 title with 20 points, despite losing their final match to South Africa.

South Africa took silver, while Spain secured bronze with 16 points.

The Lionesses managed one win and suffered four defeats in their debut appearance in the Division Two series, finishing fifth behind China and Spain but ahead of Brazil.

Next Stop: Uruguay

The second leg of the HSBC SVNS 2 series will be held in Montevideo, Uruguay, on March 21 and 22, where both Kenyan teams will look to improve their standings and push for promotion contention.
