Salama Crash: 17 Catholic Pilgrims Killed; Truck Driver Survives
Seventeen people travelling from Mikindani Catholic Parish in Mombasa to the Subukia Shrine died in a multi-vehicle crash at Salama, Makueni County, on October 3, 2026. Police later clarified that the driver of the truck involved survived with serious injuries, correcting early reports that he had died.
The victims were occupants of a private van hired to transport the pilgrims. Authorities identified all 17 people travelling in the van. The injured truck driver was taken to hospital for treatment.
What authorities said about the collision
Police said the crash happened shortly after midnight on the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway near Salama. Initial accounts said a truck driver allegedly failed to keep to the proper lane while overtaking, leading to a series of collisions. That is an early police account; a final investigation is needed to establish the full circumstances.
The National Transport and Safety Authority said it dispatched a team to support the investigation, including examination of vehicle inspection and compliance issues. NTSA has described the road section as a black spot and said recommendations to improve safety had been made.
Corrections and confirmed details
- Police clarified that the truck driver did not die; he was seriously injured and hospitalised.
- The 17 people who died were the van’s occupants, travelling as pilgrims from Mikindani Parish.
- The precise cause and any legal responsibility remain subject to investigation.
Investigation and road safety
NTSA’s investigation and police inquiries are expected to examine the circumstances of the collision. Until authorities publish their findings, claims about mechanical failure or individual responsibility should be treated as unconfirmed.
Drivers approaching a crash scene should slow down, follow police directions, leave space for emergency vehicles and avoid stopping in the carriageway or sharing graphic images of victims.
