Mau Summit–Eldoret–Malaba Road PPP: Feasibility Study and Next Steps
Kenya is preparing a possible public-private partnership (PPP) to upgrade the Mau Summit–Eldoret–Malaba road, a roughly 245-kilometre section of the Northern Corridor linking western Kenya with Uganda and regional markets. The project remains in preparation and feasibility; the government has not announced a construction start date, final cost or user toll.
What has happened so far
The PPP Directorate says a pre-feasibility study began on February 3, 2026, funded by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. It was intended to test preliminary technical, economic, environmental and financial questions. In June, KeNHA also advertised a technical feasibility study for the A8 road capacity-enhancement project under tender reference KeNHA/2963/2026. That detailed study is expected to assess engineering, traffic, environmental and social safeguards, climate risks, tolling and the proposed PPP structure.
What the proposal could include
The PPP Directorate describes the proposed upgrade as a dual carriageway, with road-safety measures, improved traffic flow and Intelligent Transport Systems. Final design, cost, financing, tolling and construction plans depend on the feasibility findings, approvals and a competitive procurement process.
What motorists and communities should watch
The next useful public details are the completed feasibility findings, the selected PPP structure, any toll proposal and the procurement timetable. Communities along the route will also need information on access changes, land requirements and construction impacts if the project advances. Until those details are published, motorists should treat the road upgrade as a proposal in development rather than an approved construction project.
