Kenyan-born, U.S.-based Linda Chebet Gómez has opened up in a Facebook post about a terrifying mid-flight medical emergency that left her unconscious on the aircraft floor, an experience she says has completely changed how she looks at life.
According to her account, she and her husband boarded a long-haul flight from Los Angeles to London in good spirits, even joking about upgrading to business class on their next trip. The flight started ordinarily: dinner was served, the cabin lights dimmed, and passengers settled into the quiet that comes with an overnight journey.
When Ordinary Became Frightening
About five hours in, Linda says she began feeling nauseous, then increasingly dizzy. She tried adjusting her seat and closing her eyes, hoping it would pass, but the feeling only got worse. She eventually told her husband she needed to get to the restroom because she felt like she was going to be sick, and he immediately got up to help her.
That’s the last thing she remembers clearly.
The next thing she was aware of was a group of calm voices around her, so composed that for a moment she thought she was dreaming. As reality set in, she realized she wasn’t in her seat at all; she was lying on the floor of the aircraft, legs elevated, surrounded by flight attendants checking on her. Crew members gently asked her simple orientation questions to bring her back to full awareness, then monitored her before helping her back into her seat and placing an oxygen mask on her. Seeing the oxygen equipment beside her, she says, is when it truly hit her that something serious had happened.
The Fear in Her Husband’s Eyes
Linda has said that watching her husband’s reaction may have been just as hard as living through the collapse herself. She recalls him repeatedly checking how she was feeling, visibly shaken by the uncertainty of those first few minutes. In her words, moments like that carry no humor, just a mind racing through possibilities no one wants to imagine.
She’s since expressed deep gratitude toward the cabin crew and fellow passengers who helped her that day, as well as her husband, for staying by her side throughout.
A Reminder That Tomorrow Isn’t Promised
Reflecting on the experience, Linda says it reshaped her understanding of how quickly life can shift — one moment making plans, the next lying on a plane floor surrounded by strangers helping her breathe. She’s since encouraged others to stop postponing joy, rest, and the people they love, because none of us knows for certain that there will be another chance to do it later.
She describes walking onto that flight expecting nothing more than a long journey to London, and walking away instead with a reminder that life can change without warning, one she says pushed her to want to live more fully, love more deeply, and let go of waiting for the “perfect time.”
