Winfred Yavi Sweeps Asian Games 10,000m, Steeplechase and 5,000m

Winfred Yavi won the women’s 10,000 metres, 3,000m steeplechase and 5,000m at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, completing the first treble of those three events at one Games, according to the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). Yavi was born in Makueni, Kenya, and represents Bahrain internationally.

Yavi’s three race wins

  • 10,000m, September 24: 32:39.18. Japan’s Nozomi Tanaka took silver in 32:41.54, and India’s Seema won bronze.
  • 3,000m steeplechase, September 27: 9:04.36, a Games record and her second gold.
  • 5,000m, September 28: 15:10.18. Tanaka finished second in 15:11.65 and India’s Parul Chaudhary took bronze in 15:14.61.

The sequence placed three demanding finals within five days. Yavi opened with the 10,000m, returned three days later for the steeplechase, then completed the treble in the 5,000m the following day. The OCA said this made her the first athlete to win all three events at a single Asian Games.

Kenyan birthplace, Bahraini representation

Yavi’s birthplace and sporting representation are distinct: she is from Makueni County but races for Bahrain. World Athletics lists her nationality as Bahrain and her personal bests as 8:44.39 in the steeplechase and 14:30.06 in the 5,000m. Her Asian Games steeplechase time of 9:04.36 was a Games record, not a personal best.

Her Asian Games wins followed an already decorated career that includes Olympic gold in Paris in 2024 and the 2023 world steeplechase title. The OCA identified the 2026 three-event sweep as a new Games milestone.
