Kenyan distance sensation Doris Lemngole has made history after being named the winner of The Bowerman, the most prestigious individual award in US collegiate track and field.

The University of Alabama athlete becomes the first from her institution to secure the coveted accolade, edging out a competitive shortlist of finalists in a season that showcased her dominance on the track.

Stellar Season on the Track

Originally from West Pokot County, Lemngole delivered an outstanding campaign, clinching two national titles and rewriting collegiate records in both the 5,000 metres and the steeplechase. Her performances placed her among the most formidable long-distance runners in the NCAA circuit.

Her excellence was not confined to collegiate competition. On the international stage, she finished fifth at the World Championships, further affirming her place among the world’s top distance athletes.

Excellence Beyond Athletics

Away from competition, Lemngole also distinguished herself academically, earning recognition as an Academic All-America Team Member of the Year, highlighting her discipline in balancing elite sport with academic success.

Her victory continues the recent dominance of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in collegiate athletics, with multiple winners from the conference claiming The Bowerman in recent years.

Widely regarded as the pinnacle individual award in US college track and field, The Bowerman honours athletes who demonstrate exceptional performance, consistency, and impact throughout the season.

Lemngole’s achievement has been warmly received in Kenya, where fans and sports enthusiasts celebrated her milestone as a proud moment for the nation and a testament to Kenya’s enduring strength in distance running.
