Busia Health Officials Say 12 Suspected Ebola Cases Tested Negative

Health officials in Busia County say a patient recently investigated for suspected Ebola tested negative, as authorities step up screening and public awareness along the border.

Busia County Director of Public Health Joseph Oprong said all 12 suspected cases tested in the county so far had returned negative results, according to a Kenya News Agency report published on October 16, 2026.

What happened at Busia County Referral Hospital?

Oprong said a suspected patient was isolated at the referral hospital while a rapid response team collected samples. The tests returned a negative result within approximately six hours, he said. Isolation of a suspected patient is a precautionary measure and should not be confused with confirmation of infection.

The clarification follows online speculation about a confirmed case in Busia. The county official explicitly rejected that claim. This distinction is particularly important while Kenya is monitoring confirmed Ebola cases reported elsewhere in the country.

Why the border remains a focus

Busia is a busy crossing point between Kenya and Uganda, with daily movements of traders, transport operators and families. Officials are screening travellers and working with community health promoters to explain symptoms and reporting procedures.

Screening helps health authorities identify people who may require further assessment, but a traveller can be incubating an illness without yet showing symptoms. Reporting exposure history accurately therefore remains important.

What people should know about Ebola

Ebola spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of a person who is ill with the disease or through contaminated objects. It is not spread by simply being in the same town as someone under investigation.

Possible symptoms include fever, fatigue, muscle pain, vomiting and diarrhoea. Anyone with relevant exposure who feels unwell should contact health services and explain their travel or contact history before arriving at a crowded facility.

Why accurate reporting matters

False claims about a confirmed case can discourage commerce, stigmatise patients and undermine trust. Equally, dismissing every possible exposure would make surveillance less effective. The responsible approach is to distinguish a suspected case from a laboratory-confirmed infection and follow verified health updates.

Busia residents are being encouraged to maintain good hygiene, cooperate with health screening and seek prompt care when appropriate.

Editorial clarification: This account concerns suspected patients who reportedly tested negative in Busia County. Suspected cases and laboratory-confirmed infections are different categories; a negative result should not be counted as a confirmed Ebola infection. Readers should consult Kenya’s Ministry of Health for current surveillance information.
