Agnes Ngetich and Sabastian Sawe Nominated for 2026 World Athlete Awards
Kenyan athletes Agnes Ngetich and Sabastian Sawe are among the 20 nominees for the 2026 World Athlete of the Year awards. World Athletics announced the shortlist on October 6. Ngetich is nominated in the women’s category and Sawe in the men’s category.
Why Ngetich was nominated
World Athletics highlighted Ngetich’s 2026 world half-marathon title and women-only world record of 1:05:15, her world cross-country title, and leading performances over 3,000 metres and 10 kilometres.
Why Sawe was nominated
Sawe’s nomination follows his London Marathon victory in 1:59:30, which World Athletics lists as a world record and the first record-eligible marathon performance under two hours.
How the award is decided
World Athletics says the voting combines four groups: fans, athletes, media and the World Athletics Family, each contributing 25 per cent. The fan survey closes on October 17 at midnight Central European Summer Time. Six finalists are scheduled to be announced on November 10 and 11, ahead of the awards in Monaco on November 29.
A nomination is a place on the shortlist; it does not mean the athlete has won the award. Finalists and winners will be announced later in the process.
