Nairobi Water Announces 24-Hour Supply Interruption: Full List of Affected Estates and Roads

NAIROBI, 13 October 2026 — Thousands of households, businesses and institutions across several Nairobi neighbourhoods face a temporary disruption to piped water after Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company announced an emergency shutdown of the NCT–Kigoro–Gigiri–Kabete pipeline.

According to a customer notice issued by the utility, Athi Water Works Development Authority (AWWDA) is shutting down the line to allow emergency repairs. The company estimates that the interruption will last approximately 24 hours, but its notice does not specify an exact time at which supply will return to every affected household.

The announcement covers parts of Westlands, Parklands, Ngara, Gigiri, Kilimani, Kileleshwa, Kibera, Nairobi West and neighbouring areas. Because distribution systems take time to refill, residents should follow further utility updates rather than assume water will return simultaneously everywhere.

Why has Nairobi Water interrupted supply?

The company attributes the shutdown to emergency repair works along the NCT–Kigoro–Gigiri–Kabete pipeline, which are being undertaken by AWWDA. The notice does not identify the precise fault, the section being repaired or the expected sequence of restoration. Those details should not be assumed without a further technical update.

Water distribution networks serve numerous branches and storage facilities. An interruption to a major line can affect neighbourhoods far from the repair site, which helps explain the broad geographical list in the notice.

What residents and businesses should do

  • Use available water carefully. Prioritise drinking, cooking, essential hygiene and other critical household needs.
  • Store water safely. Use clean, covered containers and keep drinking water separate from water intended for cleaning.
  • Check on vulnerable neighbours. Older residents, people with disabilities and households caring for infants may need help accessing safe water.
  • Plan essential services. Clinics, schools, restaurants and other facilities should review contingency supplies and hygiene arrangements.
  • Watch for verified updates. Follow Nairobi Water’s official communications for changes to the repair timetable or restoration information.

When will water supply resume?

Nairobi Water describes the shutdown as lasting approximately 24 hours. That is an estimate for the works, not a guarantee that every tap will receive water at a particular hour. As of the notice provided on 13 October, no precise restoration time for each estate is stated.

The company apologised for the inconvenience and appealed to customers to use the available water sparingly while restoration work continues. Residents seeking service updates can consult the official Nairobi Water website and its verified public channels.
