Kenya’s men’s and women’s rugby sevens teams gave home supporters two reasons to celebrate over the weekend as Shujaa and the Lionesses won their respective Safari Sevens finals in Nairobi. The men beat fellow Kenyan side Morans 24–5, while the women defeated Uganda 20–5.
A fifth consecutive men’s crown
Shujaa’s victory represented a fifth successive Safari Sevens title and their 15th overall, according to the Kenya News Agency’s October 12 report. The final brought together two Kenyan squads after Shujaa eliminated French Renegades 36–0 and Morans beat Shogun 31–10 in the semi-finals.
The decisive match showcased the depth of Kenya’s sevens programme. Rayvon Ambale scored shortly after half-time and converted his own try, while Victor Mola, Festus Shiasi and John Okoth also crossed the line. Morans scored through Lucky Onyango but could not overturn the deficit.
Lionesses defend their title
Kenya’s women’s team also delivered in the final, beating Uganda 20–5 to retain the title. The result was significant beyond the trophy: hosting a women’s competition alongside the men’s event provides a high-profile stage for players and gives domestic rugby supporters a chance to follow both national teams.
What the tournament means
The Safari Sevens combines national teams, invitational sides and developing talent. It offers players competitive minutes and coaches opportunities to assess combinations, although a tournament win alone does not guarantee future international success.
The Kenya News Agency reported attendance of more than 16,000 across the three-day event. Shujaa now turn their attention to their World Rugby SVNS 2 commitments, where they will face a different level of opposition.
Key results
- Men’s final: Shujaa 24–5 Kenya Morans.
- Women’s final: Kenya Lionesses 20–5 Uganda.
- Men’s semi-finals: Shujaa 36–0 French Renegades; Morans 31–10 Shogun.
For Kenya, the weekend was a reminder that elite rugby success depends on more than a single headline result. Sustained investment in women’s competition, coaching and development pathways will help determine whether the momentum carries into future tournaments.
