What Happens After an FKF Match Is Abandoned? How the Federation Decides

When a Football Kenya Federation match is abandoned, the score at the time may not automatically become the final result. FKF’s Leagues and Competitions Committee reviews the circumstances and reports before issuing a decision under the rules that apply to the competition.

How the review works

Reports from clubs, match officials, security staff and competition officials can help establish why play stopped and whether it could safely continue. FKF may then decide how the competition result should be recorded and whether separate disciplinary action is required.

The reason for the abandonment matters. In January 2026, FKF upheld a 1–1 score in Nairobi United versus Gor Mahia after ruling the match had been abandoned due to force majeure. In a separate case, FKF awarded Ulinzi Stars versus Murang’a SEAL to Murang’a after finding Ulinzi had refused to resume play. These decisions show why an abandoned fixture cannot be treated as having one automatic outcome.

Current example: Kariobangi Sharks and Mombasa United

The October 6, 2026 promotion-relegation playoff second leg between Kariobangi Sharks and Mombasa United was abandoned with Sharks leading 2–1 and the aggregate score tied 3–3. FKF said its committee would review club, match-official and security reports before deciding the outcome. As of October 9, the ruling had not been announced.

Until the federation publishes a decision, the tie remains unresolved. For the match chronology and the latest review status, read our October 6 playoff update.

Where to verify the result

Supporters should use FKF’s official announcements and competition records for the final decision. A news headline, live score or the score shown when a match stops should not be treated as the federation’s final ruling.
