Sifuna Unveils The Equitable Party as 2027 Presidential Vehicle
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna was presented as leader of The Equitable Party (TEP) and its presidential candidate at an unveiling in Nairobi on October 4, 2026. The party is the political vehicle being used by the Linda Mwananchi Movement as it prepares for the 2027 General Election.
TEP is an existing registered party. The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) lists its registration date as March 25, 2022, and records its slogan as “Tusawazishe”. This means the October event introduced a new political leadership and electoral direction for an already registered organisation; it did not create a new party registration.
Rebranding is a separate step
At the launch, Sifuna said the movement would seek to change TEP’s name to Linda Mwananchi Movement. The ORPP had approved reservation of that name for up to 90 days in a letter dated October 1, according to reporting on the letter. Reservation allows the applicants to pursue the next steps; it does not itself update the register’s name for TEP.
On October 8, The Star reported that TEP’s National Executive Council had approved plans to begin the rebranding process. The ORPP’s party record still lists The Equitable Party. Readers can check the register for any later formal change.
The distinction matters for voters and party members: the launch established the party vehicle and its announced leadership, while a registered name change has its own procedure. The party’s policy platform, county organisation and final coalition choices remain matters for future political decisions.
