The Azimio La Umoja coalition has unveiled sweeping changes to its leadership, appointing Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka as the new coalition party leader, months after the death of longtime leader Raila Odinga.

The decision was made during Azimio’s first council meeting since Odinga’s passing, held on February 2, 2026, marking a significant transition as the opposition coalition repositions itself ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Kalonzo Takes Over, Junet Mohamed Removed

Under the new structure, Kalonzo Musyoka replaces Raila Odinga as the Azimio coalition leader. At the same time, Suna East MP Junet Mohamed, who previously served as Secretary General, was removed from office.

Also shown the door is Raphael Tuju, who served as Azimio’s Executive Director.

In the fresh appointments:

  • Suba North MP Caroli Omondi was named the new Secretary General

  • Veteran politician Philip Kisia was appointed Executive Director

Changes Formally Submitted to Registrar

The leadership changes were swiftly communicated to the Registrar of Political Parties, John Loronokou.

Documents submitted include:

  • A notice dated January 29, 2026, convening the council meeting

  • Minutes of the February 2, 2026 meeting

  • Official resolutions approving the leadership changes

  • A letter dated February 2, 2026 notifying Junet Mohamed of his removal

  • A completed Statutory Form PP7 on change of officials

  • An attendance list of council members present

Azimio Opens Door to New Parties

In addition to leadership changes, the Azimio council resolved to open the coalition to new political parties, signaling an effort to broaden its base and strengthen its footing ahead of the next general election.

Political analysts view the restructuring as a strategic move aimed at restoring stability within the coalition and consolidating opposition leadership following Raila Odinga’s departure from the political scene.
