Atieno, Akinyi and Macharia Carry Kenya’s Hopes Into African Boxing Finals
NAIROBI, Thursday, October 22, 2026 — Three Kenyan boxers are through to the finals of the African Boxing Championships at Kasarani, giving the home team a chance to finish the continental competition with gold medals.
Grace Atieno, Elizabeth Akinyi and Clinton Macharia secured their places after winning semifinal bouts at the Moi International Sports Centre indoor arena.
Atieno, 19, overcame Uganda’s Wakawoza Rasjida in the women’s 46–48kg division when the referee stopped the contest. Akinyi also won by referee stoppage against Tanzania’s Hidaya Zahoro in the 75–80kg category.
Macharia had a closer contest in the men’s super heavyweight division, beating Uganda’s Tabule Emmanuel 3–2 on a split decision.
There were disappointments elsewhere for the Kenyan team. Amina Martha lost to Nigeria’s Ajishola Khadijat in the women’s bantamweight semifinals, while Emmanuel Odhiambo was eliminated by Uganda’s Samuel Msubuga.
According to the competition schedule reported on Wednesday, Thursday’s finals were due to begin at 1.30pm after organisers adjusted the programme because of venue arrangements. Final results were not available when this article was prepared.
The championship has offered Kenya’s boxers the advantage of competing in front of a home crowd, but the remaining bouts will decide whether the finalists convert their performances into continental titles.
