Kenyan distance-running great Eliud Kipchoge won the Nike Melbourne Marathon in Australia on Sunday, 11 October 2026, finishing the 42.195-kilometre race in 2 hours, 9 minutes and 10 seconds. The event’s official timing provider lists Kipchoge first among 17,726 marathon finishers and confirms his winning time.

A return to winning form

The result marks an important moment for the two-time Olympic marathon champion, whose previous marathon victory came at Berlin in 2023. At 41, Kipchoge demonstrated that he can still compete at the front of major road races. His Melbourne performance also established a course record, although the winning time should not be confused with his much faster personal best achieved on flatter, faster courses.

What the official splits show

SportSplits records Kipchoge reaching 10km in 30:40 and halfway in 1:04:19. He passed 30km in 1:31:09 and 40km in 2:02:14 before crossing the line in 2:09:10. The figures suggest controlled pacing through much of the race. Marathon conditions, course profiles and competition differ, so comparing finish times alone does not provide a complete assessment of athletic form.

Part of a wider running mission

Kipchoge’s Melbourne appearance formed part of his Eliud’s Running World initiative, a project intended to bring marathon running to different continents. His running team identified Melbourne as the third leg after Cape Town in South Africa and Porto Alegre in Brazil. The initiative is about participation and bringing communities together as well as elite racing.

Why this matters for Kenyan athletics

Kenya has a long record of international distance-running success, and Kipchoge’s victory adds another achievement to that history. For younger athletes, the race also highlights the importance of training consistency, pacing and adapting goals as a career evolves. The Melbourne win is a race result, not evidence by itself of future selection for a championship or another Olympic appearance.
