Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo has died in a helicopter crash near Marondera, east of Harare, alongside his wife, Lucy Muteke, and other people on board.
What Happened
Zimbabwean authorities confirmed that a helicopter crashed in the Marondera Rural area on Wednesday evening. Government and police officials said there were no survivors.
Reuters reported that the aircraft went down at about 5pm local time. Accounts of the exact number of people on board differed in early official statements, but authorities consistently confirmed that everyone aboard was killed.
Chivayo and His Wife Were Among the Victims
Family representatives and Zimbabwean media identified Chivayo, 43, and his wife Lucy Muteke among those who died. Police said formal identification work was continuing because of the severity of the crash and fire.
President Ruto Pays Tribute
President William Ruto publicly mourned Chivayo, describing him as a friend and extending condolences to the families of all those who died, as well as to Zimbabwe’s leadership and people.
Ruto said he would remember Chivayo for his friendship, energy and belief in Africa’s potential. The remarks were made in a condolence message after news of the crash was confirmed.
Chivayo’s Links to Kenya
Chivayo had become increasingly visible in Kenya in 2026 through visits, business activity and appearances with senior political figures. His presence in the country had attracted public interest because of his regional business profile and high-profile relationships.
Cause of the Crash Not Yet Established
As of October 1, authorities had not announced a final cause of the crash. Investigations were expected to focus on the aircraft, flight conditions and other operational factors.
Readers should treat social-media claims about the cause with caution until investigators release verified findings.
