Bethwel Kibet Leads Kenyan Sweep at 2026 Buenos Aires Marathon
By Shadrack Kimeli | October 1, 2026
Kenyan runners dominated the 2026 Buenos Aires Marathon, with Bethwel Kibet winning the men’s race in 2:08:28 and four Kenyans finishing inside the top five.
Kibet Holds Off Rwanda’s Hakizimana
Kibet edged Rwanda’s John Hakizimana, who finished second in 2:08:39. The 11-second gap made the closing stages a tight contest.
Kenya then filled the next three places: Felix Kirwa was third in 2:10:24, Kipkemoi Kiprono fourth in 2:10:49 and Vincent Kibor Raimoi fifth in 2:11:50.
What the Result Shows
Kenya’s strength in marathon running is often associated with major races in London, Boston, Berlin and Chicago, but results such as Buenos Aires show the depth of the country’s marathon talent across the global calendar.
A top-five containing four Kenyan athletes also demonstrates how many elite-level runners are competing internationally outside the highest-profile World Marathon Majors.
Kibet’s Winning Time
The 2:08:28 mark gave Kibet the victory in a competitive field, though it was not presented by World Athletics as a course or national record.
How Strong Was the Kenyan Performance?
Kibet’s victory was only part of the Kenyan story. With Felix Kirwa, Kipkemoi Kiprono and Vincent Kibor Raimoi also finishing in the top five, Kenya placed four athletes among the race’s leading five men. That depth is significant because marathon success depends on a large pool of elite runners rather than one headline name.
Why the Winning Margin Matters
The 11-second gap between Kibet and Hakizimana shows that the race remained competitive late into the marathon. In a 42.195km event, such a small final difference usually reflects decisions made over the closing kilometres rather than a runaway victory established early.
Where Buenos Aires Fits in the Global Calendar
Buenos Aires is part of the World Athletics label-road-race calendar. Performances at races outside the six largest marathon majors still matter for athlete rankings, prize money, professional contracts and future invitations to major international fields.
For Kenyan athletics followers, Kibet’s win also adds another name to the country’s broad marathon pipeline at a time when competition for national-team places remains intense.
