IEBC Seeks Predictable Funding Ahead of 2027 General Election

Nairobi, Kenya – 22nd February 2026: The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has called for adequate and predictable funding to strengthen its preparedness for the 2027 General Election.

The Commission, led by Chairperson Erastus Ethekon, held a consultative meeting with the Committee to Oversee the Implementation of the Ten-Point Agenda and the NADCO Report (COIN-10). The COIN-10 delegation was led by Chairperson Agnes Zani.

During the meeting, Ethekon briefed the committee on the Commission’s level of preparedness for the 2027 General Election and highlighted key challenges that could affect effective delivery of its mandate.

Call for Electoral Reforms and Financial Autonomy

The IEBC Chairperson emphasized the need for adequate and predictable funding across the entire electoral cycle to enhance planning certainty and operational efficiency. He also called for timely implementation of proposed constitutional, legislative, and regulatory reforms to address identified gaps in the electoral framework.

“There is need to operationalize the IEBC Fund, as provided for under Sections 17 and 18 of the IEBC Act (Cap. 7C) to enhance the Commission’s financial autonomy, improve planning certainty and safeguard the independence of the electoral management process,” said Ethekon.

Key Issues Raised

Among the issues discussed were:

  • Challenges in implementing the two-thirds gender rule
  • Achieving national unity and inclusivity in public institutions
  • Youth participation in politics, including party membership and engagement
  • Voter registration and strengthening the integrity of the Register of Voters
  • Safeguarding ethnic diversity and inclusivity in public offices

COIN-10 Chairperson Senator Dr. Agnes Zani pledged support, expressing commitment to engage other State agencies and stakeholders to address concerns raised during the meeting.

The consultative engagement signals renewed efforts to enhance electoral preparedness, strengthen institutional independence, and ensure credible, inclusive, and transparent elections in 2027.
