How to Set Up a KRA Tax Amnesty Payment Plan in iTax Before December 31

By Kelvin Kibet | Updated October 9, 2026

Kenyans who qualify for the 2026 tax amnesty but cannot clear their outstanding principal tax in one payment can use an iTax payment arrangement — provided the qualifying principal is fully paid by December 31, 2026.

Step-by-Step: Setting Up the Payment Plan

  1. Log in to iTax.
  2. Open Payments and select Apply Payment Plan (new).
  3. Choose the qualifying amnesty tax period or periods and enter a payment schedule you can complete before the deadline.
  4. Use Payments → Payments Registration to generate a payment for the correct tax head, sub-head and period. Check that the amount applies to principal tax.
  5. Pay each instalment and confirm it appears against the correct obligation in your iTax ledger.
  6. Clear all principal tax covered by the plan by December 31, 2026. Any qualifying principal left unpaid after that date does not receive the amnesty waiver.

What the Amnesty Covers

The programme covers qualifying interest, penalties and fines on tax debts for periods up to December 31, 2025. Any qualifying principal tax must be fully paid by December 31, 2026. Tax liabilities arising from January 1, 2026 onward do not qualify.

What Happens After Full Payment?

KRA says the waiver is processed after the qualifying conditions are met. Check your iTax ledger for the credit and the amnesty certificate, which KRA says is sent to the registered email and can be downloaded through iTax.

Do Not Wait Until the Last Week

If your ledger contains disputed assessments, missing payments or returns that need amendment, resolving them can take time. Starting early reduces the risk of reaching December 31 with an unresolved principal balance.

Check the Amount Before Creating a Schedule

Before committing to instalments, reconcile the principal amount on iTax with your own records. If payments are missing or an assessment is disputed, resolve those issues early because the amnesty depends on clearing the qualifying principal tax by the deadline.

Make the Instalments Realistic

A payment schedule should fit your expected cash flow while still clearing the full principal balance by December 31. For a business, that may mean aligning instalments with customer payments or other predictable income rather than creating a plan that cannot be maintained.

Keep Proof of Every Payment

Save payment registration numbers, bank or mobile-money confirmations and iTax receipts. After paying, check that the amount has been posted to the correct tax obligation and period instead of assuming the ledger updated correctly.

Portal Labels Can Change

iTax menu labels and workflows can change during system updates. If the wording on your screen differs from this guide, use KRA’s current help material or contact its support channels rather than forcing a step that does not match your account.
