Devastating Fire Destroys Hundreds of Businesses in Shauri, Embu

Embu | February 3, 2026

A massive fire swept through the Shauri area of Embu town on Monday night, destroying property worth millions of shillings and leaving hundreds of traders facing heavy losses.

The inferno, whose cause is yet to be determined, broke out at around 9 pm and spread rapidly through the commercial area, which is largely home to furniture workshops, timber yards, and showrooms.

Widespread Destruction

Within a short time, the flames engulfed business premises, destroying finished furniture, raw materials, machinery, and tools. Traders watched helplessly as years of investment and hard work went up in smoke.

Peter Mwololo, chairman of the Shauri United Association, said approximately 300 traders were affected, with most relying solely on the furniture business for their livelihood.

“This fire has destroyed livelihoods. About 300 traders have been affected, yet the fire brigade did not have enough water to put out the flames. We need better preparedness and proper equipment to protect our people,” Mwololo said.

Emergency Response Challenges

Efforts to control the fire were hampered when the fire engine’s water hose was reportedly vandalised by unknown individuals, slowing down firefighting operations. Traders noted that the delay allowed the fire to spread further before it was eventually brought under control.

Charles Mugambi, chairman of the Embu Business Owners Association, called for a thorough investigation, highlighting a worrying trend of frequent fires in the area.

“Authorities must investigate thoroughly to establish the cause and prevent a repeat of such devastating losses,” Mugambi said.

Traders Count Heavy Losses

Affected business owners described the scale of their losses. Geoffrey Njeru reported losing Ksh2.6 million worth of raw materials, machines, and ready-made furniture scheduled for delivery.

“Everything was destroyed by the fire, and I don’t know how I will recover,” Njeru said.

For Titus Waweru, who has operated a furniture business in Shauri since 2000, the incident was particularly devastating, marking the second time his business has been destroyed by fire, despite taking a loan to rebuild.

“We are appealing to the government to come to our aid so that we can rise again and rebuild our businesses,” Waweru said.

Concerns Over Fire Safety

The Shauri area has experienced similar fires in the past, including a major incident in 2022. Traders and community leaders are now urging the Embu County Government to improve fire safety measures, emergency preparedness, and long-term prevention strategies to safeguard businesses and livelihoods.
