Sh182 Million Kabarnet Ultra-Modern Market to Boost Local Trade
By Daily Report KE | Updated October 1, 2026
Construction of a KSh182 million ultra-modern market in Kabarnet, Baringo County, was launched in February 2026, with more than 1,000 traders expected to move temporarily to make way for the project.
What Is Being Built?
The planned three-storey facility is expected to include wholesale and retail trading spaces, a daycare centre and an ICT hub. The project was presented as an upgrade from the older market infrastructure used by traders in Kabarnet town.
More Than 1,000 Traders to Be Relocated
During the site handover, Baringo Central MP Joshua Kandie said more than 1,000 traders operating from the existing market structures would be moved to a temporary site while construction proceeded.
The relocation is a significant part of the project because traders need to continue operating during the construction period. County and national officials said the temporary arrangements were intended to reduce disruption to livelihoods.
What Is the Completion Timeline?
At the February 2026 site handover, officials said the contractor had committed to complete the market within approximately 12 months. That was a project target rather than a guarantee, and the actual completion date depends on construction progress.
Why the Market Matters to Kabarnet
A modern market can improve sanitation, storage, safety and access to services for traders and customers. The proposed ICT hub and daycare facility also broaden the project beyond simple stall construction.
County Commissioner Stephen Kutwa said his office would monitor the work, while local leaders said construction should also create short-term employment opportunities.
What to Watch Next
- Whether traders are relocated without major disruption to their businesses.
- Whether construction stays within the announced 12-month target.
- How stalls and facilities are allocated when the new market opens.
