Six Arrested in Kisumu as Police Seize 280 Litres of Chang’aa

Police in Kisumu arrested six people and seized 280 litres of chang’aa during an operation in Manyatta in February 2026.

How the operation unfolded

Kisumu Central Sub-County Police Commander Edward Ndirangu said officers acted on intelligence about a dealer allegedly transporting chang’aa from Busia to Kisumu. Police began surveillance before carrying out the operation on February 14.

The main person of interest was arrested together with five others. Police said the alcohol was being brought into Kisumu for redistribution in smaller quantities.

What happened to the seized alcohol

Ndirangu said samples would be sent to a government laboratory for analysis, while the remaining consignment would be preserved pending court directions on disposal.

Why laboratory analysis matters

Testing helps determine the composition of a seized drink and can support the evidence used in court. Police statements at the arrest stage are allegations; criminal responsibility is determined through the judicial process.

Public tips played a role

Police said information from members of the public helped identify the suspected distribution activity. Authorities urged residents to report suspected illicit-brew operations through official security channels.

Legal status

The six people were suspects at the time of the report and were entitled to the presumption of innocence unless convicted by a court.

Why illicit alcohol cases are treated as a public-health issue

Unregulated alcohol can create risks because its strength and ingredients may be unknown. That is one reason police preserve samples for laboratory analysis rather than assuming that every seized liquid has the same composition.

Enforcement should still follow due process

Public-health concerns do not remove the need for evidence. Police must document the seizure, link exhibits to suspects and present the case through the courts, where the accused can challenge the prosecution’s evidence.
