Fuliza Ya Pochi: What Safaricom’s New Credit Service Means for Small Traders

NAIROBI, October 23, 2026 — Safaricom has introduced Fuliza Ya Pochi, an overdraft product for eligible traders using its mobile-money services, according to a report by the Kenya News Agency.

The product is intended to give qualifying merchants access to short-term funds when their available balance cannot cover a transaction. For traders who regularly purchase stock or pay suppliers through mobile money, such facilities can help bridge a temporary cash shortage. Borrowing, however, carries costs and repayment obligations.

What merchants should establish

Before using the facility, traders should verify whether their business is eligible, the amount they can access, the applicable charges and how repayments are collected. Those details should be checked through Safaricom’s official information channels or the service menu, rather than assumed from the terms of other Fuliza products.

In particular, merchants need to establish whether incoming payments can be used to recover outstanding advances. A deduction from future receipts can affect money set aside for suppliers, rent or wages.

The cash-flow question

A short-term overdraft may be useful when revenue is expected shortly and the repayment cost is understood. It can also create problems when a trader repeatedly borrows to settle earlier advances. Keeping records of each advance, fee and repayment makes the true cost easier to assess.

Traders should compare the price of borrowing with the margin they expect to earn from the transaction it supports. A facility that helps complete a sale is not necessarily affordable if fees absorb a large share of the profit.

Fuliza Ya Pochi is a credit service, not a grant or business subsidy. Merchants should read the current product terms before activating or using it.
