Olympic Champion Peres Jepchirchir Provisionally Suspended Following EPO Finding
NAIROBI, October 23, 2026 — Olympic marathon champion Peres Jepchirchir has been provisionally suspended following an adverse finding for erythropoietin (EPO), according to Reuters, citing the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU).
The finding concerns a sample collected out of competition in Kenya before Jepchirchir’s victory at the Sydney Marathon in August. The Kenyan runner won the race in 2:18:31, Reuters reported.
A provisional suspension is an interim measure during an anti-doping case. It is not a final disciplinary finding. The athlete’s response and the procedures followed by the responsible authorities will determine what happens next.
A decorated marathon career
Jepchirchir won the women’s marathon at the Tokyo Olympics and has claimed titles at major city races, including Boston, New York and London. Her performances have made her one of Kenya’s best-known road runners.
EPO is prohibited under anti-doping rules because it can stimulate red blood cell production and enhance endurance. The circumstances of an individual finding must nonetheless be determined through the applicable disciplinary process.
Next steps
The case could proceed through further testing, submissions and a disciplinary hearing, subject to the rules governing the matter. Any eventual sanction or finding should be reported only after the AIU or the appropriate tribunal issues a decision.
The Sydney Marathon expressed disappointment following news of the provisional suspension, according to Reuters. Daily Report KE will update this article if the AIU announces a final outcome.
